The one story I have been dying to tell concerns Ernie Camunez. Ace and I went TDY to the 6947 from the Det for 90 days. Ernie and someone had just been to Key West, I wish I could remember who was with him, but anyway, anyone who ever knew Ernie, knows that Ernie was not wrapped up too tight. He had his girlfriend and his wife pregnant at the same time. But that's another story.
Anyway, he and whomever was with him, went off base just before he left to come back to the Det, and he did not have his "pass". Well, the Marine guard would not let him back in, so Ernie being Ernie, found a good place to jump the fence. You guess it, Marines, dogs, and squids were chasing Ernie all over the base.
I have no recollection, but I believe he made it back to the barracks, called back MacDill, and said " get me out of here". So now here I come, same rank, E-4, with Ace, Staff Sergeant, and I tried to go off base.
Well the Marine guard is not buying, that we do not need a pass. So Ace says "okay, we will go to orderly room and pick one up". Then he says come on, and we go out another gate.
Damm, I worried all night. I knew I wasn't going to climb a fence, but Ace kept saying don't worry. Yeah, right. But he was right, we never were asked coming back, and going out again, the whole time we were TDY.
I guess Ernie showed them a thing or two. Bob Garcia was also my sup, just before I left to go to Awful AFB.
And that's where Eddie and Pena were the main Men at before all of us got there. Joe Medina, Santa Rosa (Sandy) Marufo and I got to Offutt at the same time.
